✗ Ceilings were a little low, so with my 1.85m height I needed to always watch out

✓ Staying here was one of the highlight of my trip in Japan, relaxing in the Onsen was wonderful. As it's on a very steep road, avoid bringing big luggage and get ready to test your calves!

Wonderful traditional Japanese inn with onsen included and affordable food. Highly recommended.

✓ My favorite hotel we stayed at in Japan. Very clean, onsen was a wonderful experience. The meals prepared at the hotel were also very good (traditional Japanese or western breakfast option). Staff was also very helpful. Great value for the price.

Would return and would stay longer ;-)

✓ The property name says it all : « Onsen & Garden ». A super nice Ryokan, very quiet & peaceful, inside like outside. The Onsen is a must and so pleasant… a very traditional experience… the garden is super nice and welcoming… The owner of the place drives the shuttle to Gora. He’s super friendly and curious, I wish the drive was longer to get to talk more :-)

✗ Western b’fast has variety and is very well presented, but we found the sausage averaged in taste. Having said the whole b’fast is rather copious and taste is subjective 😄

✓ I liked the private onsen, the garden and the natural beauty along woth the facilities

✗ I didn't like the hill to the stay - especially as a backpacker. And it was hard for me to get to.

Quiet nook in Hakone

✓ Quiet and serene inn. Staff are very responsive and friendly. The private onsen was great. They have a selection of books and board games in the lounge. Everything on the menu is delicious.

✗ Even if you stay for two nights, they only offer you one yukata and the laundry service costs extra, so you'll have to reuse the same one for both days for the onsen. It's difficult to access nearby locations by walking, but that's more of an issue with the mountainous terrain. You can't blame them for that. If you need to stop by 7/11, which is only an 8 minute walk away, be prepared to hike :) The menu was a little pricy but considering the quality of the inn and the services it isn't so bad. There isn't much bad to say.

Exceptional

✓ The garden is beautiful, I liked looking at it when I was eating dinner and breakfast. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious! We can book the onsen for private use, it was comfortable. The room is big but the restroom is tiny. The staff is very friendly.

Fabulous

✓ I genuinely like the architecture and interior design of the place; it's pretty, well-renovated, combining old Japanese and Western styles. The path to the onsen place is amazing.

✗ Not a bad thing, but the location itself is uphill, so you'll need to climb all the way up. Please be careful if you are a heavy backpacker or have lots of luggage. Another thing to note is that the shared dorm is relatively crowded; you won't have much space to open up your luggage. However, if you have a larger budget and aren't a broke student like me, there are single and twin rooms available, I assume.
