✗ Was forced to take a western style room when I wanted a Japanese style room. Room stank of sewer capoeira from the sink, shower and bath area. I flushed out the pipes with a lot of water and sprayed the room. Was awoken at 3:00am with the same stench again. Did the same pipe flushing routine but could not get back to sleep. Hotel staff seemed unconcerned when I spoke with them the next day.

✓ Perfect reason to spend the night in Nikko. Hotel is just a few minutes walk from the temples. And the town is small enough to visit on foot. Onsen is wonderful, even get your own kimono to wear. After a day of sightseeing, onsen is exactly what you need.

✓ Authentic experience of Japanese public bathtub. Yukata and sandals provided. The western style room had a great view. Amazing front desk service.
✗ I wanted to book a traditional Japanese room and the kaiseki cuisine offered but these services seemed to be limited for two or more guests, if they were available I hope the instructions for reservation can be clearer.
